The much delayed Boeing 787 Dreamliner will be taking to the skies for the first time soon (November 2009).
It is a revolutionary aircraft – made of plastic instead of metal, a higher cabin pressure (for greater ‘customer’ comfort), better fuel efficiency and a host of other design changes.
Maybe Boeing are trying to confuse us with so many changes at once – it has certainly delayed the programme for a couple of years but mysteriously also led to a record number of 840 ’up front’ orders.
Something must be good…..what single design change do the airlines particularly love about the B 787?
One fundamental but little understood design change that Boeing WILL NOT be plugging - but is the ABSOLUTE, MOST IMPORTANT CHANGE is the reversion to ‘electrically pumped compressed outside air’ into the cabin – instead of using bleed air.
The Boeing 707 was cleverly designed to use ‘mechanically pumped compressed outside air’ but then a clever engineer in the early 1960’s suggested using ‘bleed air’ (excess compressed air from the forward end of the jet engine) – it’s a pity the engineer didn’t pay more attention to the even more cleverer engineers who advised him or her that the bleed air could easily become contaminated by toxic oil which have deadly organophosphates added to them….which have a tendency to make customers go down with ‘jet lag ‘ and much worse.
The bean counters won; Or did they?
It is true that the Boeing 727, 737, 747, 757, 767 and 777 all use bleed air and that is precisely why Boeing are now……dumping Bleed air but never admitting it. (They still use it – but only for melting the ice on the wings).

So when the Boeing media machine starts - don’t expect headlines along the lines of:
NO “BLEED AIR” FOR CUSTOMERS TO BREATHE ON THE Boeing 787
One has to hand it to Boeing – they have every right to be very proud and brave for changing back to the original system but a bit of honesty and intelligence now, would be much appreciated – by their customers.
Fly in a Boeing 787 – you physically won’t be able to get Aerotoxic Syndrome!
That’s exactly why Boeing changed. Ask them……but don’t bother to mention the word Aerotoxic – as it is a figment of many people’s imagination.
Not Boeing’s – don’t worry, they know ALL about it.
